Shiv K. Kumar (b. 1921, Lahore) was a distinguished literary figure—poet, critic, novelist, playwright, and translator. He earned his doctorate in English Literature from Cambridge and held prominent academic positions, including Chairman of the Department of English at Osmania University and later Professor and Dean at the University of Hyderabad, where he also served as Vice Chancellor.
He authored numerous acclaimed poetry collections such as Trapfalls in the Sky, which won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1987. His literary contributions also include novels like The Bone’s Prayer and A River with Three Banks, along with short stories, plays, and translations of Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Honored internationally, he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (London) in 1978 and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2001 for his contribution to literature.
